A NEW law in Germany to ban child marriage may be unconstitutional under a ruling by the Federal Court of Justice, the highest court on matters of criminal and civil law.

All marriages are given protection by the ‘grundgesetz’ (basic law) and that potentially means protection for Islamic Sharia-based child marriages to go ahead.

Bavarian lawmaker Winfried Bausback, who helped draft the law against child marriage, was furious at the ruling.

He said: “Germany cannot on the one hand be against child marriages internationally, and on the other hand be for such marriages in our own country.”
