A UNIQUE GROUP FOR ADULTS WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES has just celebrated its tenth birthday.
“Shine” was set up in May 2004 so that adults with special needs could come together for worship and find access to the Christian faith. Co-ordinator Marilyn Yarwood explained that it gives opportunities to pray and share experiences together in a non-judgemental and relaxed environment. “There is also Bible teaching that is understandable in language, yet not childish. Many of our group have been with us from day one and are good friends.”
The tenth birthday celebration was held at Worthing Baptist Church, which has hosted the meetings since Marilyn’s first husband, Rev Samuel Reading, was minister there.
Samuel Reading was a much-loved Baptist minister, but Marilyn, who remarried after being widowed, rejoices in the fact that in making “Shine” possible, Christians work together across the denominational divide.
“Shine”, is one of nearly 200 Prospects groups across the UK. Other Sussex groups meet in Clymping, Lewes and Haywards Heath.
