The US government has announced that it will not compel faith-based adoption and fostering agencies give children to gay couples.

The previous Obama administration had forced such organisations to place children in homosexual households, against their beliefs, or lose state funding. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is revising the rules to protect the right of faith-based agencies to follow their conscience and religion.

Bishops welcomed Trump’s protection

Religious groups praised Donald Trump’s commitment to religious freedom. The US Conference of Catholic Bishops said that several Catholic adoption and fostering agencies had already had to close, but welcomed Trump’s protection of those who “respect a child’s right to a mother and a father”.
